Yoga Everyday? Can I practice yoga everyday if I am a beginner? In this video I am going to offer five tips and some important guidelines about the frequency of yoga practice if you are a beginner. Listen to Your Body Most importantly, listen to your body. If you are feeling any pain or not feeling well in any way, remember it is ok to take some time off. It is not ok to push yourself in yoga. The no pain no gain thing does not apply in yoga. Take a Break Even though it is a 30 day yoga challenge, there is no rule that says you need to finish it in 30 days. We are yogis, we are flexible. It is totally fine to take a day or two off and pick up where you started. Recovery and rest is important, especially in yoga Take Your Time If you haven’t had a daily movement routine going before, remember it is also ok to start slowly. Maybe you will set a goal to practice yoga three times a week instead of everyday. Remember it is also a good idea to speak with your medical doctor if you have an injury or medical condition before you start any movement program that is designed to improve your range of motion, strength and endurance. Infinite Time and No Ambition We have a saying around our yoga community that goes like this, “Infinite time and no ambition.” It means that we don’t have to rush things. You don’t have to rush through the 30 day challenge. Often when we start something we go all in and try to do too much too soon. This is a recipe for muscle soreness in injury. It is a good idea to give yourself time to rest and recover. Restorative yoga and yoga nidra are styles of yoga that allow you to rest more deeply. I even have beginner restorative and beginner yoga nidra classes. Slow and Low Whenever I am starting something new, I like to remember the slogan, “slow and low.” This is why I love 10 minute practices. 10 minute practices are great for beginners to try a practice without getting overtired and to build endurance over time. It is also a great way for you to spread your yoga throughout the day. It is way better to practice 10 minutes of yoga everyday rather than 1 hour of yoga once a week. Remember a small amount of yoga is way more valuable than none at all.
